Kingshouse Hotel, Glencoe

A stop-off for weary travellers, the Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe, Scotland, has been welcoming guests since around 1750.

In 2014 the Hotel was put up for sale and was bought by Black Corries Estate. A project team, including hotelier Crieff Hydro Hotel, prepared proposals for redeveloping the site and in 2015 announced a major refurbishment project. The project team included Covell Matthews Architects (Aberdeen), Douglas & Stewart Construction (Ireland) and Interior Designer Brid St Ledger (Ireland).  The newly refurbished Kings House Hotel, with 57 bedrooms, reopened in February 2019.

Brief:

The redevelopment of the Kingshouse Hotel near  Ballachulish required a sensitive approach to a much loved location near Glencoe, lying directly on the route of the West Highland Way next to the River Etive in the Scottish Highlands. Set in spectacular scenery the brief for the interiors of the project was to include a range of warm textures to furnish an understated  traditional theme.

Outcome:

A bespoke herringbone woven fabric was developed in warm rusts and taupes to blend with natural wood finishes and neutral wall colours and carpets used throughout the guest bedrooms. Local scenes were used on artwork throughout the guest bedrooms and warm tones from Skopos Peru and Minerva collections were used on bedding to complement the selected drapery material. Curtains were kept simple in style, blackout lined and fitted behind simple timber pelmet boxes.

The public areas of the hotel, including bars, lounges and restaurants all offer spectacular views and therefore fabrics selected needed to blend well with the exposed timber and stonework used throughout the building.  Fabrics used included Skopos Talavera Mule from the Mila collection, Linette N5 Chestnut from Skopos Natura collection and Harlow FS24 Sage from the Skopos Flores Silvestri collection. All designs were supplied as simple dress curtains or blinds, to frame the magnificent views in colours sympathetic to the natural highland setting of the hotel.

Skopos Fabrics Ltd were employed by the client as a one stop shop providing all curtains, blinds and bedding / scatter cushions for the guest bedrooms and public areas working to the client’s deadlines for installing and handing over the finished hotel prior to the soft launch of the hotel in Christmas 2018.
